Italian at NFPS

Language Other Than English (LOTE)  Italiano

Italian is taught from years Prep to Six, for one hour each week.  In addition, there is an Extend Your Talents program, also for one hour, available to year 5 & 6 students.

The Italian program is staffed by two qualified LOTE teachers.

Students are introduced to Italian language and culture through a range of topics and teaching/learning strategies, such as shared reading, role-play, structured/guided writing, singing/chanting, cooking, making and doing – the emphasis is on enjoying the language and understanding another culture.  Here are some photos of students making pizelle as part of a unit of work focusing on Italian food.

Each year, students celebrate Carnevale, a festival held in Italy prior to the beginning of lent.  It is a time of dressing up, wearing masks, playing tricks and eating special foods.  At North Fitzroy Primary School, we have la mascherata, where students parade to live music, showing off their fabulous costumes!  You can see some of our photos from Carnevale 2008.
